Aprons—the Ties that Bind
Apron use began with the fig leaf and has a rich history that parallels the development of civilization. You will see aprons which represent important eras and events. Information will include fabrics, sewing styles, embellishment techniques and vintage fabric care. You are invited to bring an example from your collection to share and date. Wildflowers of Badger Mountain Field Trip
Come take a short hike up Badger Mountain and enjoy the beautiful native plants in bloom this time of year. Birding—the Basics
This workshop/field trip class covers bird identification by shape, flight, size, behavior and song. Learn to use a birding field guide (bring your own or use ones provided) and find out how to choose a field guide. Bring binoculars for the field trip. No students under 16 without enrolled adult.

Ice Age Floods Field Trip:Western Columbia Plateau
During the latter part of the Pleistocene Epoch (18 to 14 thou-sand years ago) gigantic outburst floods swept out of western Mon-tana, across northern Idaho and much of eastern Washington and down the Columbia River to the Pacific Ocean. Come follow part of the path of the greatest floods known to geology. Beginning at Kamiakin High School we will travel “upstream” through the Othello Channels and Drum-heller Channels that funneled floodwater to the Tri-Cities area from the Quincy Basin. We will continue across the Quincy Basin to Soap Lake at the mouth of the Grand Coulee, over Pinto Ridge to Dry Falls and down the Lower Grand Coulee. We will see giant ripples on the West Bar formed by a late flood episode and visit dry cataracts of Potholes Coulee and Frenchman Coulee on the western rim of the Quincy Basin. We’ll follow the floods through Frenchman and Sentinal Gaps and down the Columbia River back to the Tri-Cities. The bus trip is about 10 hours. Bring your own lunch, drinks and snacks. Event Planning for Dummies
Do you have a special event to plan? From a family reunion, an on the job project, a charity auction or PTO fundraiser—you can do it! Don’t get caught in a bind as Karen did in high school. She missed a leadership meeting and got named the Homecoming Chairperson. That began her 30 year adventure organizing all types of events. This is not a wedding planning class—but the ideas and tips could certainly be used for that event. Handouts provided.

It’s not Just “Costume”
Jewelry Any More!
If art is self-expression—jewelry art is the most intimate of arts. It’s the essence of personal style and the beginning of a fashion statement. Begin with a history of jewelry since the Industrial Revolution made it possible to produce quality pieces in quantity. We’ll look at Art Deco, Edwardian, Victorian, Art Nouveau and more. Learn basic jewelry and how costume jewelry has evolved to include crystals, stones, semi-precious/precious gems, plastics, ceramics and all types of metals. We’ll look at the major producers of costume jewelry in America and Europe and how their designs echo fashions and vice versa. We’ll also add tips on how to shop for jewelry and how to identify styles and manufacturers. The second night, bring two pieces of jewelry for appraisal. ($5 fee for each added piece) Snacks/beverages available at “Coffee at the Rox” for their regular fees. Handouts.

Classroom Animals
This class is geared towards teachers who have pets in their classroom. We will cover basic care and health issues, both for the animals and the students. We will also cover some possible lesson opportunities such as record-keeping, observation skills, weighing, measurement, as well as responsibility lessons. Animals covered would include mice, rats, gerbils, hamsters, small birds, guinea pigs, rabbits, lizards and fish.
